Steven Knight, the mastermind behind Peaky Blinders and Taboo, has introduced a new series — A Thousand Blows. This story about underground boxing in Victorian England has already been renewed for a second season, though not everyone may make it through the first.
A Thousand Blows: No-Holds-Barred Fights in Gritty London
Set in 1880s East End London, a world plagued by poverty and crime, the series follows two friends, Hezekiah and Alex, who arrive from Jamaica with nothing but their determination. They quickly realize that boxing is their only path to survival. As they enter the brutal world of underground fights, they cross paths with Andy Sugar, a local legend who refuses to be defeated.
A Thousand Blows: A Real Gang and Harsh Social Reality
Beyond the violent fights, A Thousand Blows captures authentic historical elements, including the all-female gang 'The Forty Elephants', notorious for robbing the wealthy, and the bleak criminal underbelly of London. Knight once again explores themes of class inequality, racism, and the struggle for survival. However, some critics argue that his social commentary in this series loses focus.
A Thousand Blows: Gritty Atmosphere and Strong Performances
Despite some narrative flaws, the series thrives on its atmosphere and stellar cast. Malachi Kirby (Black Mirror) delivers a compelling performance as a man fighting for dignity, Erin Doherty (Call the Midwife) portrays a woman trying to escape her past, and Stephen Graham is so imposing that he seems capable of knocking down buildings with a single punch.
Did Steven Knight Deliver Another Hit with A Thousand Blows?
The series features all the signature elements of Knight’s storytelling — bloody brawls, dark alleys, corrupt cops, and shattered dreams. However, A Thousand Blows lacks originality. A rookie boxer challenges a champion, a poor man fights his way into high society, and the ruthless criminal world crushes everyone in its path. Perhaps Knight has saved his best for the second season. Or maybe, this time, he has finally lost the fight.
