Streaming platforms continue to delight fans of spy thrillers. Following The Agency with Michael Fassbender, Netflix has released the series Black Doves, starring Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw. Unlike its darker predecessors, this project promises a lighter and more dynamic viewing experience.
A Spy with Secrets
Keira Knightley plays Helen Webb, a mother of two, a model wife, and, incidentally, a spy working for a secret organization. For years, she has been gathering classified information about her husband’s political activities and selling it.
When her lover is found murdered, Helen’s old friend, professional assassin Sam (Ben Whishaw), steps in to help uncover the conspiracy and protect the agent.
Unconventional Humor
Screenwriter Joe Barton chose not to emphasize drama but instead presented the story as a dark comedy, where viewers don’t worry too much about the characters’ fates. From the outset, it’s clear that the protagonists will survive to the finale and defeat their enemies.
At the same time, the series’ clichés aren’t seen as drawbacks but are part of the joke, particularly evident in the spirited and occasionally silly dialogues.
