Will 'Spy' with Jason Statham Get a Sequel? The Director Answered It Once and for All

Stills from the movie 'Spy' (2015)

The action-comedy thriller tore up the box office in its time.

It’s the kind of news no Jason Statham fan wants to hear. Nearly a decade after Spy became an unexpected action-comedy classic — and earned Statham one of his best-reviewed roles ever — director Paul Feig has finally spoken about a possible sequel. And his answer? Let’s just say it’s not what fans were hoping for.

While speaking to MovieWeb’s George Edelman, Feig admitted that Spy would "probably be the one" of all his films that makes sense for a sequel. But don’t get too excited.

"I’m not a big sequel chaser," he said. "Even though we just did one, I love doing original stuff... and it takes so long to make a movie."

The original 2015 film saw Melissa McCarthy as a desk-bound CIA analyst thrust into the field, with Jason Statham hilariously stealing scenes as the ultra-serious, ultra-incompetent agent Rick Ford. Jude Law also starred as the suave but oblivious spy Bradley Fine, whose early disappearance sets the entire mission in motion.

The unlikely trio — paired with Paul Feig’s sharp direction — turned Spy into a box office hit and a cult favourite. Yet despite its success and the ongoing fan demand, Feig says he’s more drawn to exploring new stories, genres, and ensembles.

So, despite the film’s lasting popularity and fan obsession with Rick Ford’s over-the-top bravado, it looks like Spy 2 won’t be cracking the case any time soon.
