According to Deadline, Sony Pictures Animation and Netflix are collaborating to bring the parapsychologists into a fresh dimension for the first time in a feature-length format.
This new film should not be confused with the animated series that has been in development at Sony Animation and Netflix since 2022. Instead, it aims to expand the Ghostbusters universe as the franchise seeks to explore new avenues following the release of the live-action legacy sequels, Afterlife and Frozen Empire.
While plot details remain tightly under wraps, insiders from Deadline report that Kris Pearns, director of Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 and The Willoughbys, has been tapped to lead the project. Furthermore, these insiders suggest that the goal of both the new animated series and movie is to revitalize the franchise, similar to what the Spider-Verse films have achieved for Spider-Man.
With Sony Pictures Animation's unique 2D/3D hybrid style showcased in Into and Across The Spider-Verse, as well as The Mitchells Vs The Machines, the stewards of Ghostbusters are likely hoping to capture some of that same magic for the supernatural franchise, especially in light of Frozen Empire's underwhelming critical and commercial performance. If a shift in format and direction is what it takes to make Bustin' feel good again, then we wholeheartedly support it.
To the Ecto-1, fellow fans!
