Update from the Set of Nolan’s Most Epic Project Yet: No Trailer, But Better — It's Date

Christopher Nolan

Epic adaptation inches forward with first official trailer date.

Christopher Nolan is deep into production on The Odyssey, his upcoming adaptation of Homer’s epic poem — and now, fans now have something to mark on their calendars: the trailer (or more likely, a teaser) is set to premiere in July 2025, ahead of Universal’s Jurassic World: Rebirth, which hits theaters on July 2.

This aligns with Nolan’s typical release strategy, where a first look at the film drops roughly a year ahead of its actual debut. In this case, The Odyssey is slated for a theatrical release on July 17, 2026.

Reportedly budgeted at around $250 million, The Odyssey is shaping up to be Nolan’s most ambitious project to date. The film is being shot using state-of-the-art IMAX cameras, with cinematography once again led by Hoyte Van Hoytema — a frequent collaborator of Nolan’s whose work has defined the look of films like Interstellar, Dunkirk, and Oppenheimer.

Matt Damon in The Odyssey (2026)

Filming began on February 25, 2025, and is expected to continue through June. Nolan was last spotted on set in Italy, where production has been underway, likely taking advantage of the country's classical landscapes and coastlines to bring ancient Greece to life.

As for the cast, Nolan has assembled a star-studded lineup featuring Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, Mia Goth, and Samantha Morton — a mix of frequent collaborators and fresh faces for the director.

True to its source material, The Odyssey is expected to be a sweeping, large-scale narrative likely to exceed three hours in runtime. The ancient Greek epic tells the story of Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, and his perilous, years-long journey home after the Trojan War. If Nolan stays true to Homer’s text, audiences can expect encounters with Cyclopes, Sirens, and sorceress-goddesses, as well as explorations of themes like heroism, loyalty, betrayal, and the power of fate.
