At this point in his illustrious career, Tom Cruise has achieved remarkable feats that few can match. The star of the Mission: Impossible franchise has piloted Boeing fighter jets, scaled the world's tallest skyscraper, held his breath underwater for six minutes, and even jumped a motorcycle off a cliff, all while convincing audiences that his 5'7" stature could embody the towering Jack Reacher. According to Deadline, that is about to change, as Cruise is set to collaborate with his American Made and Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman on a new supernatural thriller titled Deeper.
As reported by Roger Friedman's Showbiz411 and confirmed by Deadline, Liman and Cruise are working with Warner Bros. on what could be their third (or possibly fourth, with a potential SpaceX film in development) project together. At a recent New York screening of the documentary Gaucho Gaucho, Liman expressed his excitement to explore the horror genre, explaining that neither he nor Cruise has delved into that territory yet. While specific details about the film remain under wraps, it has been revealed that the story follows an astronaut who confronts "a terrifying force" during an expedition into an uncharted trench.
Deeper has seen several potential pairings over the years, with Bradley Cooper, Kornél Mundruczó, Idris Elba, and Baltasar Kormákur previously attached to the project, which has been in development since 2016. With Cruise potentially concluding his Mission: Impossible journey with The Final Reckoning, and Liman fresh off the successes of The Instigators and Road House, it seems like this duo could be the perfect team to finally bring Deeper to fruition. If Cruise soon appears in a spacesuit or a snorkel, we might have a good idea of what cinema's adventurous star has in store next—possibly Edge of Tomorrow 2: Live, Die, Repeat, and Repeat!
