Stephen King has long been considered one of the main inspirations for horror stories in Hollywood, but he himself is not averse to evaluating the work of his colleagues in the industry (and in the genre). The writer occasionally shares his own recommendations from the world of cinema and TV series, and although not all of them can be classified as horror, King's personal list also includes some pretty creepy stories.
For example, King, of course, has his own favorite horror - but, as the writer's most devoted fans might expect, the main thing in it is not the number of jump scares.
Stephen King considers The Defector his favorite horror
The writer has previously offered to get acquainted with a list of his personal favorites of the genre, and the leader among them was the 1979 detective horror film The Defector starring George C. Scott. King did not forget to mention what made the film so attractive in his eyes.
According to the writer, there are no scary monsters in The Defector, but the scene in which a child's ball bounces down the stairs was enough to make even King himself not sleep a wink after watching it.
What's special about The Defector
This old horror film has become a favorite of Stephen King - the film is considered the best in George C. Scott's career. The plot of the film centers on composer and music professor John Russell, who, after the tragic death of his wife and daughter, decides to move to a secluded mansion that has not seen a single tenant for twenty years. Over time, however, John begins to suspect that there is someone else in the house besides him - and it seems that it is a child trying to reveal some terrible secret to him.
Those who have ever watched The Defector will easily understand what King is talking about - the film does not rely too much on special effects and screamers, but "takes" with its story and, above all, the emotional effect it creates.
