These Series Are Worth Dropping Everything For: 5 Hidden Gems

Stills from series 'The Luminaries', 'Reacher ', 'Anne with an E'

Not a single throwaway project.

If your streaming algorithms keep pushing the same predictable dramas and formulaic crime shows, it’s time to take a step sideways. We've compiled a list of five unconventional series — each based on a book.

These shows don’t just hook you with plot; they also inspire a return to their literary roots. You'll find alternative history, mystical drama, thrillers, and nostalgia — there’s plenty to choose from.

The Luminaries

A historical drama with a touch of mysticism, The Luminaries takes you to gold rush-era New Zealand. The main character, Anna Wetherell, arrives at the edge of the world seeking a new life, only to get caught in a web of strange coincidences and astrological intersections. Every "luminary" represents part of a celestial pattern, and events unfold as if mapped by the stars. Visually, it's a cinematic gem, and the story will appeal to those who enjoy layered narratives with hidden meaning.

The Luminaries

The Man in the High Castle

An alternate reality where the Third Reich and Japan won World War II. The U.S. is divided between the two powers, while underground, mysterious films circulate — showing another world where the Allies were victorious. Based on the novel by Philip K. Dick, the series preserves the book's atmosphere of paranoia, moral conflict, and unease. A perfect choice for those who enjoy slow-burning but richly developed stories.

Reacher

If you've been missing a rugged lone hero with both brains and brawn — this is it. Jack Reacher, a former military police officer, roams America and always seems to end up in the wrong place at the wrong time. Actor Alan Ritchson embodies the role perfectly: imposing, charismatic, and taciturn. Each season is based on a separate Lee Child novel, making the stories standalone and accessible at any point. A solid pick for fans of classic crime thrillers.

The Suspect

A British mini-series you can binge in a single evening. At the centre is a well-known psychologist who suddenly becomes a murder suspect. He launches his own investigation while gradually losing the trust of his friends and colleagues. Based on the debut novel by Michael Robotham, this series is a treat for fans of psychological thrillers — expect drama, suspense, and a chilling atmosphere.

The Suspect

Anne with an E

A new take on the classic Anne of Green Gables novel — full of warmth, but also a good deal of sorrow. The story of orphan Anne, who ends up in a family expecting someone else entirely, is told more deeply and darkly than in previous adaptations. The series explores trauma, survival, and hope — not just red braids and imagination. Though it ended after three seasons, it became a source of comfort and inspiration for many viewers.
