'The 8 Show': Everything You Need to Know About Episodes, Seasons, and More

Still from the series 'The 8 Show' (2024)

The Netflix K-drama has quickly become a must-watch series, tapping into the recent trend of survival stories that explore the darker sides of human nature.

Based on Bae Jin-soo's webtoons Money Game and Pie Game, the show follows eight strangers who find themselves locked in a mysterious building, forced to participate in a live-streamed competition where they earn money by the minute. While fortunes can be made, the contestants must work together to entertain unseen viewers, leading to increasingly violent confrontations as trust erodes.

By the end of Season 1, it’s revealed that the participants managed to keep the show running for over two months without society noticing their absence. The protagonist, known as 3rd Floor (Ryu Jun-yeol), returns home with over 1.5 billion won (about $1.1 million) but struggles to reintegrate into normal life. After a funeral for 1st Floor (Bae Sung-woo), he reunites with some contestants, while others are left with unresolved fates.

Since its May 17 release, The 8 Show has gained a global following, leaving fans eager for answers and a potential Season 2. The finale features a meta mid-credits scene where 7th Floor (Park Jeong-min) pitches a script about their ordeal, hinting at the show's future while poking fun at streaming culture.

While Netflix has yet to confirm a renewal, early ratings are promising; The 8 Show became Netflix's biggest non-English series shortly after its premiere. With many questions left unanswered — such as who created the show and what lies ahead for its characters — there’s ample material for a second season. Additionally, Bae Jin-soo's new webtoon Funny Game could provide inspiration for future storylines, potentially following 3rd Floor as he navigates another brutal competition with new rules and participants. Fans are hopeful that Season 2 will delve deeper into the shadowy forces behind this chilling game.
