It is commonly believed that American projects dominate the number of views on Netflix. And indeed, it's incredibly hard to compete with the ratings of Stranger Things or The Witcher.
However, non-English releases also spark a great deal of interest among audiences. We’ve compiled five such series that have received high ratings from online users.
Dark (8.8, Germany)
In a small German town, children suddenly begin to disappear. Locals link the disappearances to a nearby nuclear power plant. The main character is a teenager who finds himself at the heart of the events, and viewers can expect plenty of twists, including time travel.
Move to Heaven (8.7, South Korea)
The main character is a young man who helps his father run an unconventional family business, cleaning up the apartments of people who have recently passed away. The series not only explores real-life Korean companies but also offers a philosophical reflection on death, set against the backdrop of the protagonist’s personal struggles.
Shtisel (8.6, Israel)
The central character is a substitute teacher living in an orthodox neighborhood, hoping to find a wife. His father eagerly arranges dates for him, but the protagonist eventually finds love on his own with a widowed woman with a child. This choice shocks his family, and the series offers a fresh perspective on the traditional Jewish community.
Sacred Games (8.6, India)
This series is a far cry from typical Indian cinema with its bright costumes and frequent dance numbers. Instead, it immerses viewers in a dark and gritty criminal world. The main character, an honest cop, receives a call from one of the most dangerous gangsters, who warns that the city will soon be destroyed, and only the two of them can stop it.
Money Heist (8.3, Spain)
A brilliant criminal assembles a large team to carry out a daring heist at the Royal Mint of Spain. However, the meticulously planned operation is at risk of failing as the gang members act too emotionally. The popularity of this Spanish series was driven by its unconventional narrative, with viewers constantly guessing when the heist would fall apart, only for the characters to fix things. Over time, Money Heist shifted to a melodramatic storyline, disappointing some fans. Still, the first season remains a favorite for many.
