Sundance Film Festival Officially Moves to Boulder: A New Chapter Begins

Sundance Film Festival

Boulder was the chosen candidate, and that it’s been a well-kept secret in Hollywood for nearly six months, we received official confirmation today that the Sundance Film Festival is indeed relocating to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.

Representatives for Boulder secured a substantial tax credit rumoured to be around £34 million, along with a plan to create a more centralised festival akin to Telluride, Toronto, and Cannes. As a result, Boulder will now host the world’s most significant film festival for independent cinema.

It's a shame that Sundance is moving from Park City in two years. Those quaint little theatres, like The Egyptian and the Library, were always part of the festival's charm. The shuttle buses that painstakingly transported you to these venues added to the experience. Boulder does make sense, though. It’s a tranquil location set in the mountains, comparable in size to Park City. It’s also far more accessible, with numerous direct flights to the region, whereas Park City lacks an airport.

Sundance founder Robert Redford has strong ties to Boulder — he attended university there and even worked as a janitor at a local restaurant before heading to Hollywood. His son Jamie and daughter Shauna also graduated from the university in 1985. The festival has been held in Utah since 1985. The 2026 edition will still take place in Park City, but it seems that will be the last.
