The morning of February 26 began with a sensation: John Lithgow, star of Conclave and Dexter, officially confirmed that he will play Albus Dumbledore in the new HBO series about Harry Potter. But the joy of fans, who can already imagine the actor saying something like “Happiness can be found even in dark times, if you remember to turn to the light,” was slightly overshadowed by his revelation.
The last chapter of my life
Lithgow, who is already 79, admitted that accepting the role was not easy for him. And the reason is not fear of the scale of the franchise, but the fact that this project will probably be his last.
"This will define the last chapter of my life," the actor told ScreenRant. "I'll be about 87 years old at the wrap party."

The actor admits that the decision was difficult for him. After all, filming a series is a long and energy-consuming process, especially for a man his age. But, as a true wizard, he couldn't refuse such a challenge.
What is HBO saying?
Interestingly, HBO has not yet confirmed the deal with Lithgow, leaving fans in limbo. In an official statement, the studio only hinted that it would "confirm details as negotiations are completed." But, apparently, the actor is already mentally trying on the mantle of the Hogwarts headmaster.
What does this mean for the series? Firstly, Lithgow will be the first American to play in the franchise about the boy who lived. Secondly, his casting is a signal that the project is moving forward. Filming is set to begin in the summer of 2025, with a release expected in late 2026 or early 2027.
