‘Sonic 3’ Post-Credits mystery: Which Characters to Make an Unexpected Return in the Fourth Film?

Stills from the film 'Sonic'

The next premiere is set for 2027.

If you've already seen Sonic 3 in theaters, you probably noticed the subtle hints dropped by the creators about the future of the franchise. Not only did the film offer a fast-paced plot, but it also left an intriguing teaser for what's to come. And now there's no doubt: the Sonic cinematic universe is expanding.

Paramount has confirmed work on the fourth installment, set to premiere in 2027. However, fans won’t have to wait that long — the third movie already features two post-credits scenes that hint at the next chapter.

First post-credits scene: A new foe and an unexpected ally for Sonic

In the first scene, Sonic finds himself in the middle of New York City, utterly confused about what's happening. But before he can make sense of it, Metal Sonic, the robot created by Dr. Robotnik to fight the blue hedgehog, appears before him.

However, Sonic isn’t alone for long. A mysterious figure holding a massive hammer comes to his aid. It's Amy Rose, a beloved character from the SEGA games, known as Sonic's loyal friend and companion.

Why these particular characters appeared in the scene? Metal Sonic first appeared in Sonic CD, where he was created by Dr. Robotnik to eliminate Sonic. In the same game, Amy played a key role, as she was kidnapped by the robot. Given that Sonic CD involved time travel, it’s possible these characters are visitors from a dark future.

Second post-credits scene: The return of Shadow

The second scene confirmed what many fans were hoping for: Shadow is alive! The brooding, mysterious hedgehog survived the events of Sonic 3, meaning his story is far from over. Rumors suggest that the studio may release a standalone spin-off focused on Shadow, inspired by the cult classic Shadow the Hedgehog game. This project has long been considered one of the most intriguing in the franchise's history, and fans have eagerly awaited its big-screen adaptation.

What does this mean for the future of Sonic?

Both post-credits scenes clearly indicate that Sonic 4 is not only happening but will introduce new, significant elements to the story. We can expect to see Metal Sonic, Amy Rose, and the continued story of Shadow, and perhaps even time travel. Now, all that’s left is to wait for 2027 to see where the speedy hedgehog takes us next.
