In the episode of Variety's Actors on Actors series that aired on Thursday, December 12, Angelina Jolie spoke with Cynthia Erivo and recounted the moment when she saw one of her daughters experience Wicked's Act 1 finale live on Broadway for the first time.
“I remember my daughter when she watched 'Defying Gravity.' And I remember that moment, because as a mom, sometimes we watch things and we want art to have an influence," Jolie said.
"And I remember that moment and I remember catching her. And I felt that feeling of, ‘Oh, she needs this. She sees this. She’s feeling this desire to know that there’s endless possibility and something within her that she hasn’t discovered yet,'" she went on.
"And this was how I was feeling about it in that moment. I loved seeing it live, I loved when it came at the end of this film. Live theater is wonderful – seeing what you’ve added to this because now you’re able to do what you’re able to do on screen is so exciting," Jolie said to Erivo, who plays Elphaba in the film.
In a clip shared on Instagram, Angelina Jolie spoke to FOX 5 DC about Maria, and when asked if she ever revisits her old films, she admitted that, although she doesn't particularly enjoy watching them herself, her children have begun to watch some of her earlier work.
Jolie is mother of six — Maddox, 23, Pax, 20, Zahara, 19, Shiloh, 18, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 16 — with ex Brad Pitt.
“I have started to, I haven’t watched them but some of my children will tell me they watched something [from] when I was younger and that will remind me of a time or I’ll understand how…because they know me now," Jolie shared.
"Kind of what that was and who I was then. There’s something interesting about that."
