Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal, who co-starred in the 2023 film 'Foe', may have a long professional partnership ahead of them. Ronan recently shared her vision of a "shared career" with Mescal during a press junket interview with reporter Landon Johnson. However, don’t expect to see her in 'Gladiator III', Mescal’s latest franchise endeavor.
"I would do a film with Paul. Yeah, definitely," Ronan said when asked about appearing in the still-ungreenlit sequel. "[But] I don’t know if there’s a character for me in Gladiator. It is tough."
Instead of venturing into action epics, Ronan expressed her desire to tackle a musical. She referenced the dual debuts of 'Wicked' and 'Gladiator II' on November 22, playfully stating, "I’d love to be a witch with the girls."While it would’ve been fun" to play Glinda (a role taken by Ariana Grande), Ronan redirected the conversation to her strong bond with Mescal.
"Paul and I will do many things together in our life," Ronan said. "We became so close on the movie that we made together [Foe], and we plan on having a whole career shared with one another."
Mescal recently showcased his humor by parodying 'Gladiator II' during his Saturday Night Live hosting gig on December 7. The skit drew inspiration from director Ridley Scott’s revelation that the sequel was initially conceived as a musical, imagining the action-drama as a theatrical singalong.
Ronan, meanwhile, has not ruled out participating in a musical film. She expressed enthusiasm about working on such a project with her 'Little Women' and 'Lady Bird' collaborator, Greta Gerwig. "A lot of people say they want Greta to write us a musical, and we’ll do that together. I think that would be really fun," Ronan shared with IndieWire.
Despite admitting that she’s "not a singer," Ronan told The Playlist that she would "love to be in a film musical." She reflected on her vocal moments in 'Blitz', saying, "I’ve done little bits here and there. And listen, I’m not a professional singer, but I love to sing, and I get very nervous doing it in front of anyone. So it was a big thing to have to perform in front of people."
As Ronan sets her sights on musicals and future collaborations with Mescal, fans can look forward to seeing where this dynamic duo takes their shared career next.
