Quentin Tarantino is known in Hollywood as the author of unusual scripts that later became his most resounding hits, but for a while, the director seriously contemplated remaking a detective horror film that was released back in the 1970s. What’s even more interesting, Tarantino even managed to discuss this with the leading actress of the film, but in the end, he struck out on all fronts — and by then, it was already too late to return to the idea.
Tarantino was planning to remake the Italian horror film The Psychic (Original title: Sette note in nero)
The film indeed became one of the few that inspired the renowned director enough that he was ready to direct something not based on his own script. As Tarantino admitted in his early interviews, the idea resonated with him, but he decided to start filming only if Jennifer O'Neill agreed to reprise her role. In the original film, the actress played a woman tormented by a bad feeling who discovers a skeleton in the wall of her own home — after her husband is accused of murder, the heroine teams up with her psychiatrist to uncover the reasons behind all these strange occurrences.
Jennifer O'Neill also became excited about the idea — but she never returned to her famous role
According to Tarantino, he immediately called the actress after he had thought through a preliminary script in his mind; she responded enthusiastically, admitting to the director a couple of days later that she, too, had been thinking about the remake day and night. However, even despite Tarantino's enthusiasm, O'Neill understood that the film production would definitely not take place in the next couple of years — if it ever happened at all.
Fortunately or unfortunately, the actress was right — as with many projects that Tarantino dreamed of bringing to the screen, the reboot of The Psychic never happened. O’Neill's decision to end her acting career in the early 2000s became the final nail in the coffin for the remake.
