The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has redirected $250,000, originally allocated for this year’s Oscar Nominees Luncheon, to the Motion Picture & Television Fund (MPTF) to assist Southern California residents impacted by the devastating wildfires. This contribution brings the Academy’s total support for the MPTF's relief efforts to an impressive $1 million.
A Community in Crisis
The wildfires, which have raged for over a week, have tragically claimed dozens of lives and destroyed thousands of homes, including those of four members of the Academy’s 55-person board of governors. In light of this, the board voted to cancel the Oscar Nominees Luncheon and reallocate its budget to relief efforts.
Additionally, the Academy extended the Oscar nominations voting window, delayed the announcement of nominations, and postponed the Scientific and Technical Awards. However, the 97th Oscars ceremony remains on schedule for Sunday, March 2.
Hollywood Comes Together
The Academy’s decision mirrors similar efforts by other organizations in the entertainment industry:
- The Recording Academy announced that the Grammys, set for February 2, will serve as a fundraiser for wildfire relief.
- The Producers Guild of America pledged a portion of the net proceeds from the Producers Guild Awards, happening February 8, to the Entertainment Community Fund.
- SAG-AFTRA is donating $1 million to its philanthropic arm, the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, to support affected community members.
A Legacy of Support
The MPTF, established in 1921, has long been a pillar of the Hollywood community, providing assistance to those in need. The Academy’s donation reinforces its commitment to aiding fellow Angelenos during challenging times.
As Hollywood rallies to support its community, the Academy’s actions demonstrate how even canceled events can make a significant impact when priorities shift toward compassion and relief.
