One of the Best Horror Films of the Decade Finally Hits Netflix: Its Ending Sparked Debate for Years

One of the Best Horror Films of the Decade Finally Hits Netflix: Its Ending Sparked Debate for Years

A family satire or a striking statement on determinism? Even experts are divided.

Hereditary became a true sensation in the horror genre. Released in 2018, the film was immediately praised by critics and audiences alike, grossing nearly $88 million at the box office. Yet since its premiere, it has been nearly impossible to watch legally. Thankfully, Netflix is now correcting this oversight.

The film tells the story of the Graham family, who are haunted by a series of tragedies following the death of their enigmatic grandmother. As dark family secrets come to light, the tension builds, leading viewers toward a shocking conclusion. Ari Aster skillfully blends elements of classic horror with an in-depth exploration of themes such as grief, family conflict, and heredity.

One of the standout elements of the film is the performance of Toni Collette, who plays the family matriarch, Annie. Her searing portrayal—capturing the pain of loss and the depths of emotional breakdown—remains one of the most powerful in her career. However, Collette was unjustly overlooked by major awards, a snub that continues to spark heated debates on social media.

But it’s not just the emotions and atmosphere that make Hereditary a standout film. The unpredictable plot, which initially seems like a typical ghost story, gradually evolves into a dark family drama with occult undertones. The film’s climax is so unexpected that viewers have been debating its meaning for years.

Fans of the genre call the ending one of the most discussed moments in modern cinema. It is packed with symbolism and leaves ample room for interpretation: some see it as a satire on family bonds, while others perceive it as a philosophical exploration of the inevitability of fate.

Starting January 15, 2025, Hereditary will be available on Netflix. For those unfamiliar with the film, it’s a chance to experience a rollercoaster of emotions and relive one of the most unforgettable endings in horror history.
