Voice actor Hudson Thames' slip of the tongue ended up doing a disservice to the new Spider-Man animated series. His revelations put the entire crew in a tough position, prompting the series showrunner to comment on his words.
Earlier this week, as reported by Kinoafisha, Thames voiced his concerns about certain aspects of the animation, and the word ‘woke’ sparked backlash among fans.
“I thought it was awesome. I mean, my biggest fear was that it was gonna be annoying and woke, and it wasn't, and I was like, ‘Yes, this is great, it's so well written.’
Remarkably the term ‘woke’ in Hollywood is frequently used negatively or sarcastically, implying that there’s an excessive focus on political correctness.
As part of the Reddit's AMA, the series showrunner Jeff Trammell had to clarify Thames' statement, calling it an unintentional slip of the tongue.
“Ha, I love Hudson and didn’t focus too much on what he said. I believe he simply misspoke, and I know that’s been weighing on him. I think we made a fantastic show that is going to appeal to a wide audience and hopefully captures what I love about this Spider-Man: that he’s a guy who cares deeply about the people around him and always tries to do the right thing.”
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man follows Peter Parker on his way to becoming a hero, with a journey unlike we've ever seen and a style that celebrates the character’s early comic book roots.
