No More Rumours: Garland to Direct Elden Ring in Record-Budget A24 Project

Filming expected in 2026 for studio’s boldest venture yet.

Alex Garland seems to be trading his so-called directorial break for something far more ambitious — a plunge into the Lands Between. According to new confirmations from The InSneider, Garland is in final talks to direct a film adaptation of Elden Ring, with A24 poised to bankroll what could be the most expensive project in the studio’s history.

This move signals a notable shift for A24, a studio long associated with artful indies and prestige horror, now edging confidently into blockbuster territory. With their slate already including a Death Stranding adaptation, Garland’s Elden Ring points to a clear intent: elevated, auteur-driven takes on complex gaming universes. And if recent budget rumours are to be believed — with Civil War pegged at $50M and Marty Supreme allegedly climbing to $60M — the studio’s scale is evolving as quickly as its ambitions.

For Garland, it’s another deep dive into sprawling worldbuilding — only this time with spectral knights, corpse-strewn fields, and cryptic demigods. The game, from Dark Souls creator Hidetaka Miyazaki and co-director Yui Tanimura, blends Martin-esque lore with punishing gameplay and surreal landscapes. Now, it’s poised to be reimagined through the lens of a director known for cerebral tension and haunting visual grammar.

Filming is reportedly set for 2026, making Elden Ring Garland’s next feature following his work on the 28 Years Later trilogy.
