Murder in the Retirement Home? First Teaser Lands as Chris Columbus Takes On Cosy Crime With a Killer Cast

Helen Mirren, Sir Ben Kingsley , Pierce Brosnan, Celia Imrie

Helen Mirren leads silver sleuths in a deadly new case.

Chris Columbus, the director behind some of Hollywood’s most iconic family blockbusters (Home Alone, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, Mrs. Doubtfire), is stepping into deadlier territory — with a wink. His latest film, The Thursday Murder Club, adapts Richard Osman’s bestselling novel into a charming murder mystery with a twist: the detectives are all retirees with a penchant for cold cases and warm cups of tea.

The newly released trailer introduces viewers to a seemingly peaceful retirement community where murder is suddenly on the menu. Helen Mirren, Sir Ben Kingsley, and Pierce Brosnan lead the ensemble as four elderly residents who swap gardening for sleuthing when a local developer turns up dead. As clues (and bodies) pile up, the Thursday Murder Club must race to solve the case using unconventional — but surprisingly effective — methods.

Scripted by Ol Parker (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel), and backed by Netflix, the film mixes gentle humour with old-school intrigue. It marks a return to directing for Columbus, who in recent years has stayed mostly behind the scenes. Spielberg, who was once eyeing the project himself, remains on board as executive producer — reuniting with Columbus decades after their Gremlins collaboration.
