So much for Marvel playing it close to the chest. When Captain America: Brave New World dropped its first trailer, fans didn’t just see Sam Wilson taking up the shield — they also saw Harrison Ford hulking out. Yes, that’s right: Ford’s Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross becomes Red Hulk, and Marvel showed it front and centre.
Why spoil such a juicy twist so early? Director Julius Onah says they had no choice. Speaking to Empire Magazine, he explained:
"Once you announce Harrison Ford is Ross, you’re toast. The MCU fandom is too sharp. It would’ve leaked — a toy, a screenshot, something."
For the uninitiated: Red Hulk isn’t Bruce Banner gone rogue — he’s Ross, a longtime Hulk antagonist who gets his own rage-fuelled glow-up. After the death of William Hurt, who originally played Ross, Ford stepped into the role, marking his long-awaited Marvel debut.

It’s a bold move for an actor best known as Han Solo and Indiana Jones — but Ford reportedly brings a harder, more ruthless edge to Ross. His Red Hulk is less tortured scientist, more military brute with an agenda. So the surprise may be spoiled, but the showdown? Still very much worth the hype.
