Jabba the Hutt: The Real Biography Behind the Monster in 'Star Wars'

Still from the film 'Star Wars'

Why the Hutts Were the Most Dangerous in the Shadow Economy.

On screen, Jabba the Hutt is a comical and repulsive slug, lying in the dim light of his palace, mocking his prisoners. But behind the scenes, he is one of the most influential and ruthless criminal overlords in the history of Star Wars. His story is not just a side episode but a true galactic mafia epic.

Heir to an Ancient Empire

Jabba is a member of the Hutt species, who ruled entire sectors of the galaxy long before the Republic. Their economic power was built on slavery, weapons trade, and smuggling. The Hutt space was a semi-official criminal zone where laws only applied by their will.

Empire Built on Bones

Jabba inherited power in his clan by ruthlessly eliminating a rival. At 80 years old, he established his own base on Tatooine, transforming a monastery into the headquarters of his criminal empire. His influence stretched across hundreds of planets. He employed bounty hunters, traded with the Empire, and formed alliances with Jedi and Sith — all for personal gain.

Hermaphrodite and Proud of It

In the old canon, Jabba was considered a hermaphrodite. He had a son but no partner — he reproduced on his own. Later, Disney removed this aspect of the lore, officially designating Jabba as a "male." However, the core idea remained: for the Hutts, gender was more of a social role than a biological category.

His End Came from a Princess

Greed led to Jabba's downfall. He couldn't forgive Han Solo for losing the cargo, but he underestimated Leia. He was strangled with a chain in his own palace — and thus ended the career of one of the most cunning, scheming, and wealthiest gangsters in the history of a galaxy far, far away.
