Alan Cumming is reflecting on his unforgettable experience filming GoldenEye, the 1995 James Bond blockbuster that introduced Pierce Brosnan as 007. In a new video interview with Vanity Fair, the actor revisited his role as the eccentric computer programmer Boris Grishenko, a character best known for his overconfident catchphrase: "I am invincible!"
A Bond Villain’s Fiery Freeze
Cumming revealed that working on GoldenEye was his first experience on a massive Hollywood production. The film aimed to modernize the Bond franchise, introducing stronger female characters and even earning Cumming the unofficial title of Bond Boy, a playful twist on the traditional Bond Girl trope.
However, not all memories from set were pleasant. In one of the film’s most famous moments, Boris meets his demise in an explosion of computer coolant, which instantly freezes him. While it looked seamless on screen, the reality was far from glamorous.

"They had this big rubber band around my waist to keep me in place so I wouldn’t fall over from the impact," Cumming recalled.
"Then they chucked lumps of dry ice at me, and it stuck to my head and burned my scalp. But I couldn’t move because of the band, so I was just standing there, going, 'Ow, ow, this hurts!'"
Firemen to the Rescue
It wasn’t until on-set firemen noticed his distress that they rushed in to help, pressing down on his head to remove the burning ice. "It was a nightmare," Cumming admitted.
Beyond the painful stunt, he also wasn’t a fan of the mannequin created to depict his frozen body. When offered the prop after filming, he declined, only to later regret it when the mannequin was displayed in a traveling James Bond exhibit.

Despite the mishaps, Cumming looks back fondly on his time as Boris, especially because of the character’s memorable line: "I am invincible!" Unlike some actors who grow tired of being asked to repeat their most famous quotes, Cumming loves it. "It can be annoying when people want you to say things from old films," he said, "but I actually love when people ask me to say 'I am invincible.'"
What’s Next for Alan Cumming?
Along with reminiscing about GoldenEye, Cumming discussed his work on films like Spy Kids, Eyes Wide Shut, and Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion. He also teased that he’s set to film the long-awaited sequel to Romy and Michele later this summer.
From painful stunts to unforgettable one-liners, Cumming’s experience in GoldenEye proves that even Bond villains have their battle scars.
