This project, confirmed by Variety and IndieWire, sees Hader collaborating with Daniel Zelman, the creator of Damages, as co-showrunner and executive producer. Should the series move forward, Hader is also set to direct and may portray Jim Jones himself.
Founded in 1955, the Peoples Temple became notorious after the tragic murder-suicide of over 900 members in 1978 at Jonestown in Guyana, where they consumed Flavor Aid laced with cyanide. Hader, known for his acclaimed dramedy Barry, which earned him two Emmys for Best Actor in a Comedy, has expressed interest in exploring various genres post-Barry.
Zelman has a strong pedigree in television, having co-created Bloodline and worked on Succession. This new Jonestown project is distinct from previous HBO efforts related to the topic, including a series developed by Vince Gilligan and a docuseries produced by Leonardo DiCaprio. As Hader embarks on this ambitious project, he emphasizes the importance of clear direction as a director to foster creativity among actors.
