In the new Hunger Games installment, Woody Harrelson will be replaced. The actor who portrayed Haymitch will no longer be seen, and there’s a reason for that.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is a prequel story that focuses on Haymitch Abernathy and his path to victory in the 50th annual Hunger Games.
Let's remind you that in The Hunger Games series, Haymitch Abernathy, a former victor from District 12, becomes the mentor to Katniss and Peeta. After winning the 50th Hunger Games, he struggles with alcoholism and trauma. Throughout the series, he helps guide them through the Games and the rebellion. By the end of Mockingjay, Haymitch survives the war and plays a role in leading the new government of Panem.

Franchise producer Nina Jacobson, speaking with Variety, shared that since the story focuses on Haymitch's journey to becoming the character fans know, they are seeking a younger actor to bring him to life.
"We’ve been holding our breath for a long time, but I think that what we’re looking for in that role is, you don’t want somebody who’s impersonating Woody, but you want somebody who very credibly feels like they could be a young version of this character, before the trauma and grief and rage that the fallout of the Games create."

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping will be released in theaters on Nov. 20, 2026,
