From Screen To Real Life: Is the Dire Wolf Back? The Shocking Revival of an Extinct Species

Still from the series 'Game of Thrones' (2011)

The US has reportedly succeeded in reviving the extinct species Aenocyon dirus, commonly known as the dire wolf, using DNA extracted from the tooth and skull of ancient predators.

However, this claim raises numerous questions. Many suspect that the American startup behind this project is merely attempting to pass off genetically altered wolves as a "resurrection" of a Pleistocene species.

It's important to clarify that we are discussing the dire wolf, not the enormous direwolves from George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones (or more accurately, A Song of Ice and Fire). Interestingly, the scientists involved in this so-called resurrection seem to have taken inspiration from popular culture. Among a litter of three wolf cubs, one female has been named Khaleesi — a nod to the iconic character from the series. The male pups have been dubbed Romulus and Remus.

One can only hope these namesake pups aren’t housed together! Perhaps Khaleesi will take it upon herself to liberate all animals from their enclosures and exact revenge on the researchers for "great justice." Speaking of direwolves in popular culture, one cannot forget their appearances in South Park, where they share their Canadian wilderness with direbears!
