Jesse Armstrong, the Emmy-winning mind behind Succession, clearly isn't one for creative downtime. His upcoming HBO feature Mountainhead has gone from pitch to polished product in record time. First floated in December 2024, the film was shot in just five days this March — and is now set to premiere on 31 May. In an industry known for protracted timelines and endless tweaks, Mountainhead stands out as a bold exception.
Described by HBO Max chief Casey Bloys as "a crazy experiment," the project pairs a sharply timed script with a minimalist production model. Much like a stage play, Mountainhead unfolds primarily in a single location — a choice that likely aided the whirlwind shoot. But if the filming was stripped-down, the talent certainly isn't: the cast includes Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman and Cory Michael Smith.
Set against the backdrop of a rolling international crisis, the story follows a tightly-knit group of ultra-wealthy friends as tensions escalate — socially, politically, and possibly existentially. Armstrong, who also wrote and directed, continues his exploration of power and privilege, albeit this time with a cinematic lens. Viewers familiar with his work on In the Loop and Four Lions will recognise the same undercurrent of biting, uncomfortable wit.
Thanks to its rapid production and timely theme, Mountainhead lands just in time to qualify for Emmy consideration. Whether this brisk, bold approach will pay off remains to be seen — but in true Armstrong fashion, it’s unlikely to be boring.
