From Fridge to DeLorean: The Evolution of 'Back to the Future’s Iconic Time Machine

Still from the movie 'Back to the Future' (1985)

In the original script for Back to the Future, the time machine that Marty McFly uses to travel through time was initially designed as an old refrigerator.

Creators Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale envisioned the time machine as a common household appliance — an ordinary, outdated fridge that Marty could find and modify for his time-traveling adventures. This quirky idea was meant to add a unique twist to the sci-fi concept, making the time machine feel more accessible and grounded in everyday life.

However, as production progressed, the filmmakers decided that a refrigerator might seem too out of place and even frivolous for the tone of the movie. They wanted something more visually striking and futuristic. Ultimately, they replaced the fridge with a modified DeLorean DMC-12 sports car, which quickly became an iconic symbol of the Back to the Future franchise.

The sleek silver DeLorean perfectly captured the film’s blend of sci-fi and adventure, becoming inseparable from its identity. Still, the original refrigerator concept remains a fascinating glimpse into how different Back to the Future could have been.
