'Father Mother Sister Brother': Jarmusch’s International Film Explores Family Ties Across Three Countries

Jim Jarmusch

Star-studded triptych by Jarmusch set to premiere on Lido.

The Venice Film Festival lineup is still to be announced, but one film is already confirmed to be part of the official competition. Jim Jarmusch’s upcoming feature,Father Mother Sister Brother, is set to screen on the Lido, according to Efe Cakarel, CEO of the film’s co-producer Mubi. Cakarel announced this during a keynote speech at SXSW London, stating, “That’s already confirmed.”

Shot last year, the film features an impressive cast including Cate Blanchett, Vicky Krieps, Adam Driver, Tom Waits, Charlotte Rampling, Indya Moore, and Luka Sabbat. The movie is a triptych that tells three separate stories set in different countries — each exploring complex relationships between adult children and their somewhat distant parents. The first segment, Father, takes place on the U.S. East Coast; Mother is set in Dublin, Ireland; and Sister Brother unfolds in Paris, France.

While Jarmusch has historically premiered most of his films at Cannes, he has previously shown work at Venice — most notably Coffee and Cigarettes in 2003. The producers include Charles Gillibert (Annette), Joshua Astrachan, Carter Logan, and Atilla Salih Yücer. The project is a collaboration between Saint Laurent Productions — headed by creative director Anthony Vaccarello — Mubi, Fremantle’s The Apartment, Jarmusch’s Badjetlag, and CG Cinema. Irish co-producers Richard Bolger and Conor Barry from Hail Mary also contributed. The film received support from Fís Éireann / Screen Ireland and secured equity financing from Cinema Inutile.
