Despite Its 6.6 IMDb Rating, This Netflix Project Is Everywhere — Even in the Platform’s Top 10

Global Look Press — still from the movie 'Enola Holmes' (2020)

Overall, this movie is for a very specific audience.

Netflix loves to promote its most successful projects, and Enola Holmes is one of them. Despite a rather modest IMDb rating of 6.6, the film has amassed an impressive 189 million hours of viewing time and secured a spot among the platform’s most popular titles. But what explains this phenomenon?

A New Take on the Sherlock Holmes Universe

The main character of the film is the younger sister of the famous detective, raised by a single mother who instilled in her a sharp mind and deductive skills. One day, Enola discovers that her mother has disappeared and sets off for London to solve the mystery on her own.

If you think this character never appeared in Arthur Conan Doyle’s works, you’re absolutely right. The film is based on the books by Nancy Springer, who took advantage of the fact that some rights to the characters had entered the public domain and created an entire series of novels about the youngest Holmes sibling. However, this didn’t save her from legal battles with the author’s estate, which claimed that Sherlock’s portrayal was too liberal.

Enola Holmes

Why Is the Film So Popular?

Enola Holmes is a lighthearted adventure film that fits perfectly into the family-friendly movie format. It boasts a dynamic plot, vibrant characters, and subtle humor. Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) delivers a convincing performance in the lead role, while Henry Cavill as Sherlock Holmes adds an extra layer of appeal to the film.

Of course, if you’re a fan of classic Sherlock Holmes stories, some elements of the film might seem unusual to you. But for those looking to unwind with a lighthearted detective story infused with comedy, Enola Holmes is a solid choice.
