‘Creature Commandos’ (2024): A Wildly Fun and Twisted Start to the New DC Universe

Still from the series 'Creature Commandos'

A new review by our critic.

I just finished watching Creature Commandos (2024), and let me tell you — it’s as wild, irreverent, and unexpectedly heartfelt as I hoped it would be. This is the very first project from James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe, and if this is the tone we can expect moving forward, I’m all in.

From the moment the show kicks off, it throws us into the world of Amanda Waller’s latest experiment: a black ops team of monstrous misfits, each weirder and more dysfunctional than the last. We’ve got Eric Frankenstein, his Bride, the radioactive Doctor Phosphorus, G.I. Robot, and a few other surprises — all forced to work together under the ever-scheming Waller. It’s got the same chaotic energy as The Suicide Squad but leans even harder into the absurdity and dark humor.

James Gunn’s fingerprints are all over this show. The writing is sharp, funny, and full of that signature mix of crude jokes and surprising emotional depth. One minute, I was laughing at a ridiculous bit of dialogue; the next, I was genuinely invested in the relationships between these outcasts. The animation? Absolutely fantastic. It’s fluid, stylish, and captures the grotesque-yet-cool aesthetic of these bizarre characters perfectly.

That said, Creature Commandos isn’t for everyone. If you weren’t a fan of Gunn’s Suicide Squad or Guardians of the Galaxy, this might not change your mind. Some parts feel familiar — witty, dysfunctional team dynamics are kind of his thing — but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s what he does best, and he delivers once again.

Overall, Creature Commandos is a bold, hilarious, and action-packed start to the new DCU. It proves that even the most obscure characters can shine with the right creative vision. If this is just the beginning, I can’t wait to see what comes next.
