Christopher Nolan Considers This Old Psychological Horror With Robert De Niro A Masterpiece

Christopher Nolan

The film was a box office failure but later became a cult classic.

Like any other director with a whole piggy bank of hit blockbusters, Christopher Nolan is a big fan of cinema himself. He has admitted more than once that 2001: A Space Odyssey and the Star Wars franchise became his greatest discovery and subsequently a huge source of inspiration for the creation of his sci-fi masterpieces.

However, Nolan has favorites not only among the films themselves, but also among actors, the director personally admires, for example, Robert De Niro, many of whose films also served as a kind of inspiration for Nolan's future projects.

In particular, Nolan considers the psychological horror with the actor to be one of his favorite films, and for good reason, because the film itself, although it failed miserably at the box office back in the 1980s, eventually acquired the status of a cult film.

Angel Heart is one of Christopher Nolan's personal favorites

In one of his interviews, published a couple of years ago, the director admitted that he watched Angel Heart several times, and each time he found something completely new in the film. According to Nolan, Alan Parker managed to create a story with an unexpected ending, which completely changes the viewer's perception of the entire film.

Nolan said that he himself became such a viewer and was simply amazed that every time he re-watched Angel Heart, he found a new hint at a shocking ending.

Critics liked Angel Heart, but it did not interest viewers

In the film, released back in 1987, Robert De Niro played the mysterious Louis Cypher, who hires a private detective to find musician Johnny Favorite. Harry Angel, played by Mickey Rourke, takes on the case, but with each new clue the case becomes more and more confusing, and witnesses begin to die in strange ways.

The film flopped at the box office, grossing only $17 million on an $18 million budget, but was critically acclaimed, with Rotten Tomatoes giving Angel Heart an 82% positive rating. Since then, the film has been considered an underrated cult classic.
