HBO Documentary Films is currently producing a feature-length documentary about Flaco, the Eurasian eagle-owl who captured the world’s attention after mysteriously escaping from his enclosure at the Central Park Zoo in 2023. Directed by Penny Lane (Music Box: Listening to Kenny G), the film will recount the extraordinary story of how Flaco, born and raised in captivity, managed to survive in the wilds of New York City, despite never having hunted for food before.
A City Rallies Around an Unlikely Hero
Flaco’s escape in February 2023 stunned birdwatchers, conservationists, and everyday New Yorkers alike. Rather than struggling to adapt, the owl quickly demonstrated an impressive ability to fend for himself, soaring over Manhattan, hunting, and thriving in an environment vastly different from his zoo enclosure.
Director Penny Lane has been deeply invested in Flaco’s story, admitting, "I lost many nights of sleep worrying about him." She also developed a close bond with dedicated birdwatchers who documented his movements and adventures throughout the city.

HBO and the Public Join Forces
In a unique approach, Lane and producer Gabriel Sedgwick are enlisting the help of the public, encouraging those who witnessed Flaco’s journey to contribute photos, videos, and personal anecdotes. The project is being produced by Sandbox Films and Spinning Nancy, known for their work on compelling documentary storytelling.
When Will the Documentary Be Released?
HBO has yet to announce an official release date for the film, but with production underway, it is expected to arrive sometime in late 2024 or 2025. The documentary will follow in the footsteps of other acclaimed HBO productions, bringing a heartfelt and visually stunning exploration of Flaco’s resilience and the deep connection he formed with the people of New York.
Flaco’s story is more than just a tale of escape — it’s a testament to survival, adaptability, and the unexpected ways nature can thrive in urban landscapes. As the documentary takes shape, audiences can look forward to an emotional and awe-inspiring journey into the life of one of New York’s most beloved escape artists.
