The detective drama Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, was once a major television event, propelling its lead actors to an unprecedented level of fame. However, fans’ joy didn’t last (relatively) long — in 2017, seven years after the first season’s release, the fourth season aired and unexpectedly became the last. Since then, there have been no significant updates on Sherlock, but talk of a new season never really stopped — even from the show’s creators themselves.
Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss Are Still Open to Reviving Sherlock
And they’ve said so openly more than once. In a recent interview, Moffat, one of the show’s creators and writers, admitted that he does have a few ideas, though nothing concrete has been decided with Gatiss yet. Nevertheless, both are ready to return to the story of the Baker Street detective at any moment — when an idea emerges that appeals to the entire team.
Moffat Already Has One Such Idea
Discussing the potential future of Sherlock with more seasons, the producer added that this time the series could return to its roots — and show the main characters several years after the events of the fourth season. According to Moffat, in Arthur Conan Doyle’s original stories, Sherlock and Watson were older than their TV counterparts — not to mention that the characters themselves underwent significant changes when transferred from the 19th century to the modern era.
