All About Space, and No Vampires : Stewart's First 'Big' Movie Wasn't 'Twilight', and Here's Why Audiences Prefer to Forget It

Stills from the movie 'Zathura: A Space Adventure' (2005)

The Jumanji parody turned out to be controversial.

Kristen Stewart became a star after Twilight, but her first major role in Hollywood happened three years earlier — in the fantasy adventure Zathura. Unlike the vampire melodrama, this film passed by a wide audience and is hardly remembered today.

Zathura: Worthy of Oblivion?

The 2005 film was created on the principle of Jumanji — the main characters find a game that takes them to incredible circumstances. Only instead of the jungle, they go to space. Stewart played Lisa, the older sister of the main characters, who spends much of the film frozen due to the game's curse.

"If you think about it, that movie was amazing. We were all little. I love that world. I love the idea of a board game that is addictive," the actress said in a recent interview, but viewers disagreed.

Zathura Still

Despite Jon Favreau directing and a cast including Tim Robbins, Josh Hutcherson, and Dax Shepard, the film was not a hit. With a budget of $65 million, it did not even break even, which put an end to a sequel.

Although Zathura received a 77% on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences quickly forgot about it. The reason is simple: the film was released between the premieres of two major franchises — Harry Potter and The Chronicles of Narnia — and failed to attract their audiences.

Three years later, Stewart would play Bella Swan and change her career forever. And Zathura will remain just an interesting episode of her early career.
