A Very Anderson New Spy Story: Coming Soon with a Trailer — and Basically Half of Hollywood

Wes Anderson

Set in the '40s, the film features Kate Winslet’s daughter.

Wes Anderson is back — this time with trench coats, top secrets, and a cast list that reads like a dream. During a masterclass in Paris this week, the director revealed that the trailer for his upcoming film The Phoenician Scheme will be released next week.

Leading the cast is Benicio Del Toro, playing a businessman caught in a 1940s-set web of espionage and family tension. Joining him as co-leads are Michael Cera and rising actress Mia Threapleton, who also happens to be the daughter of Kate Winslet — marking a high-profile spotlight moment in her career.

As expected from Anderson, the ensemble is stacked with familiar collaborators and fresh faces alike. The lineup includes Bill Murray, Riz Ahmed, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Willem Dafoe, Rupert Friend, Benedict Cumberbatch, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jeffrey Wright, Bryan Cranston, and Hope Davis.

The film has been acquired by Focus Features, with a limited theatrical release set for May 30, followed by a wider expansion on June 6. Unsurprisingly, the project is also expected to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, continuing Anderson’s long-standing relationship with the prestigious event.

With its period setting, signature ensemble, and a promise of stylized spy intrigue, The Phoenician Scheme already looks like classic Anderson — just with a little more danger.
