Despite George R. R. Martin's prolonged procrastination — which has been worrying fans as he hasn't released the final parts of his A Song of Ice and Fire saga over the past 14 years — the Game of Thrones cinematic universe continues to thrive. With each new year, the franchise gains more projects. For instance, the prequel House of the Dragon has been dominating streaming screens for three consecutive years, another spin-off titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set to premiere soon, and just a few months ago, a film set in the familiar world of Westeros was announced.
Although this upcoming project is predicted to achieve massive success, especially if it explores an untold story from Game of Thrones, such a scenario has little chance of making it to the screen — primarily because George R. R. Martin himself is against it.
A new Game of Thrones movie could be the perfect addition to the franchise under one condition
The cinematic universe based on A Song of Ice and Fire is already rich with events and storylines, but even it has gaps. For example, House of the Dragon takes place roughly 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. These 200 years were arguably some of the most pivotal in Westerosi history.
By the time Game of Thrones begins, the Targaryen dynasty has already been overthrown by Robert Baratheon, whose rebellion permanently altered the fictional land’s history. Focusing on these events could help fill in the timeline gap and make the upcoming movie a worthy addition to the cinematic universe.
Everyone likes this idea, except George R. R. Martin
Martin discussed this in a post on his personal blog, Not a Blog. According to the author, he has long been aware that thousands of fans dream of learning more about Robert Baratheon's rebellion. Some particularly passionate fans even created a petition.
However, Martin believes this decision would be premature. He published this blog post several years ago when he was confident that he would finish A Song of Ice and Fire. At the time, Martin assured fans that the last two books of the saga would contain a much more compelling storyline that could potentially become the focus of a future movie.
As many can now speculate, the story of Baratheon’s rebellion remains one of the few options, but whether it will form the basis of the upcoming project remains unknown.
