The BBC has revealed the trailer and release date for Miss Austen, an upcoming drama exploring the life of Cassandra Austen, the lesser-known but deeply influential sister of legendary author Jane Austen. Starring Keeley Hawes (Bodyguard, It’s A Sin), the series is set to premiere on February 2, 2025, on BBC One, with all episodes available on BBC iPlayer that morning. U.S. audiences can catch the show starting May 4 on PBS Masterpiece.
Adapted from Gill Hornby’s acclaimed novel, Miss Austen reimagines the mysterious destruction of Jane Austen’s letters by Cassandra, transforming it into a heartfelt tale of sisterly devotion and literary legacy. BAFTA-winning writer Andrea Gibb (Elizabeth Is Missing) crafted the screenplay, and celebrated filmmaker Aisling Walsh (Maudie) brings it to life with her signature vision.
A Journey Through Love and Loss
The story begins in 1830, years after Jane Austen’s death. Cassandra, portrayed by Hawes, visits Isabella, the niece of her late fiancé, who faces losing her home. Ostensibly there to help, Cassandra’s true mission is to retrieve Jane’s private letters before they fall into the wrong hands. The discovery of these letters triggers a series of flashbacks, offering a poignant look at the romantic entanglements, friendships, and heartbreaks that shaped the lives of both Austen sisters.
Synnøve Karlsen (The Crown) and Patsy Ferran (A Confession) star as the younger Cassandra and Jane, capturing their bond amidst the trials of 19th-century England.
A Star-Studded Cast and Creative Team
In addition to Hawes, the cast boasts talents such as Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones), Alfred Enoch (How to Get Away with Murder), and Jessica Hynes (Years and Years). The show is a collaboration between Bonnie Productions and Masterpiece, in association with the BBC. Executive producers include Christine Langan, Susanne Simpson, and Polly Williams.
