Dreams on Netflix are coming to an end — the streaming service has announced that The Sandman will conclude with its second season. A third season is not in the cards, despite the comic book material offering enough content for at least four volumes. For fans hoping to see more chapters of Morpheus' story, this is both good and bad news: the continuation is happening, but it will also be the final installment.
Why The Sandman Is Ending: The Official Explanation
Showrunner Allan Heinberg explained that the decision to wrap up the adaptation was made back in 2022 when the team reviewed the remaining material in the original comics.
"We knew we had enough story for just one additional season," Heinberg stated. "We are immensely grateful to Netflix for the opportunity to bring this world to life with such attention to detail, and we hope the final season will surprise both devoted comic book readers and new fans of the series."

Despite receiving strong ratings — 88% on RT and 7.7 on IMDb — the executives decided to call it quits. The premiere of The Sandman in August 2022 was a major event, quickly topping Netflix’s charts and earning widespread praise for its adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s cult graphic novel.
Fans had waited years for confirmation of a second season, and now its fate is sealed — it will be the last journey through the realm of dreams.
The Real Reason The Sandman Is Being Canceled
However, the show's cancellation is not solely due to creative reasons. The announcement comes amid a major controversy surrounding Neil Gaiman, the original comic creator and one of the series’ producers.

The writer has been at the center of sexual misconduct allegations, which he has vehemently denied. Regardless, publisher Dark Horse Comics has cut ties with him, and his Coraline musical has been shut down. Gaiman has also exited the final season of Good Omens on Amazon, while Disney has put an adaptation of one of his books on hold.
For The Sandman fans, Season 2 will be both a triumphant conclusion and a bittersweet farewell. The final season is set to premiere in the summer of 2025, with Tom Sturridge returning as Morpheus on a journey to restore order to his realm after centuries of imprisonment.
