Dr. Strangelove, with Steve Coogan, is coming to cinemas with National Theatre Live from 27 March.

The iconic film Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb has been reimagined in a fresh and exciting production featuring the talented Steve Coogan.This new adaptation pays homage to Stanley Kubrick's original 1964 masterpiece while infusing it with Coogan's unique comedic flair. Here’s a closer look at this innovative take on a classic.

A Fresh Spin on a Timeless Classic

Steve Coogan steps into the role of the titular character, Dr. Strangelove, a former Nazi scientist who becomes a key advisor in the U.S. military during the Cold War. Coogan's portrayal brings a modern twist to the character, blending his signature humor with the absurdity of the original narrative. The production retains the satirical edge that made the original film a cultural touchstone while exploring contemporary themes of power, paranoia, and the absurdity of war.

Currently playing at the Noël Coward Theatre, this production is directed by Sean Foley and co-adapted by Armando Iannucci and Foley himself. The show features the talented Steve Coogan, a seven-time BAFTA Award winner, who takes on multiple roles, including Dr. Strangelove, President Merkin Muffley, Group Captain Lionel Mandrake, and Major TJ Kong.

Coogan is joined by a stellar cast that includes Giles Terera as General Buck Turgidson, John Hopkins as General Jack D. Ripper, Oliver Alvin-Wilson as Jefferson, Penny Ashmore as Vera Lynn, Ben Deery as General Staines, Richard Dempsey as Frank, Mabli Gwynne as swing, Mark Hadfield as Faceman, Tony Jayawardena as Russian Ambassador Bakov, and Tom Kelsey, Daniel Norford, Dharmesh Patel, Adam Sina, Alex Stoll, and Ben Turner in ensemble roles.

The show will be screened in UK cinemas through a partnership with National Theatre Live, with screenings beginning on March 27, 2025, and available worldwide.

The creative team behind this ambitious production includes set and costume designer Hildegard Bechtler, lighting designer Jessica Hung Han Yun, sound designers and composers Ben and Max Ringham, projection designer Akhila Krishnan, casting director Amy Ball, illusions by Chris Fisher, movement director Lizzi Gee, associate director Dewi Johnson, and associate costume designer and supervisor Laura Hunt. Additional contributions come from Lucy Adams (associate lighting designer), Arthur Carrington (casting associate), Sam Clarkson for Sound Quiet Time (sound system designer), Kate Elizabeth (wigs and make-up supervisor), and props supervisors Chris Marcus and Jonathan Hall for Marcus Hall Props, along with production manager Chris Hay.
