Jennifer Lopez made a dazzling entrance at the Sundance Film Festival on January 26, 2025, as she premiered her first-ever movie musical, Kiss of the Spider Woman. The 55-year-old star turned heads in a black Valdrin Sahiti lace gown, sparkling with Hassanzadeh jewelry arranged in a spiderweb pattern from neck to hem. To combat the Utah chill, Lopez paired the stunning look with a white fur coat, exuding Old Hollywood glamour.
A Bold Adaptation
Directed by Bill Condon, Kiss of the Spider Woman is a fresh take on the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, which was itself based on the 1976 novel by Manuel Puig. Set during Argentina’s 1980s civil war, the film focuses on two prisoners: a political dissident played by Diego Luna and another man portrayed by Tonatiuh.
Although Luna was absent from the premiere due to a family emergency, Condon shared his regret, saying, "[Luna] sends his love… but he’s heartbroken not to be here."
Lopez’s Scene-Stealing Role
Lopez stars as Ingrid Luna, a movie star who takes on mythical significance in the imagination of one of the prisoners. The Sundance synopsis hailed Lopez’s performance as "a career-highlight" with "showstopping musical numbers" that showcase her unmatched dance and vocal skills.
The actress revealed that the tight schedule for this independent film posed unique challenges.
"I would’ve liked to have had a whole year to do a big musical like this, but… we didn’t have much time. It was challenging, but we pulled it through," she said during a Los Angeles Times panel.
Lopez’s co-star Tonatiuh praised her incredible energy and dedication, calling her "a force of nature". Reflecting on their time filming, he said:
"It was watching a mastery of work to see you before every single time… This is incredible."
Awaiting Its Release
The Kiss of the Spider Woman has yet to secure a distributor or release date, but the anticipation is high. Lopez, along with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon via their production company Artists Equity, serves as one of the film’s producers.
With its rich drama, bold performances, and musical flair, Kiss of the Spider Woman is poised to captivate audiences whenever it makes its way to theaters.
