The Hunger Games universe is expanding once again with Sunrise on the Reaping, the fifth film in the franchise and an adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ upcoming novel. Announced even before the book’s completion, the movie will hit theaters on November 20, 2026, offering fans a deeper exploration of Panem’s darker history.
A Glimpse Into the Bloodiest Games
Set 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games (2008), Sunrise on the Reaping focuses on a young Haymitch Abernathy as he navigates the horrors of the 50th annual Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. This particular Reaping doubled the number of tributes — two boys and two girls from each district — making it the bloodiest event in Panem's history.
Haymitch, hailing from District 12, isn’t alone in the arena. As hinted in the book’s synopsis, he’s joined by a sister-like friend, a compulsive oddsmaker, and a high-spirited girl from his district. The story also introduces Haymitch’s romantic relationship with Lenore Dove, offering fans a more personal look into the character’s life.

Suzanne Collins described her inspiration for the story as stemming from philosopher David Hume’s concept of "implicit submission" — the idea of how easily the many are governed by the few. She noted, "The story lent itself to a deeper dive into the use of propaganda and the power of those who control the narrative. The question 'Real or not real?' seems more pressing to me every day."
Returning to Familiar Hands
Francis Lawrence, who previously directed Catching Fire, Mockingjay Part 1, Mockingjay Part 2, and The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, will helm the film. Speaking about casting a young Haymitch Abernathy, Lawrence explained that the process is not about finding someone who imitates Woody Harrelson but rather someone who embodies the humor, intelligence, quirk, and darkness that define the character. In his words,
"It’s a search... you have to dig down and figure out what are the elements that make Woody Harrelson so interesting. It’s not somebody that just looks like him or acts like him. It’s about finding someone believable who could evolve into the Haymitch we know."
