Martin Scorsese is stepping behind the scenes to produce Aldeas – A New Story, a feature-length documentary honouring the legacy of Pope Francis through a global creative initiative rooted in dialogue, diversity and community. Developed by Scholas Occurrentes — the educational movement founded by the Pope — the film offers a deeply personal window into his final on-camera reflections, captured exclusively for the project.
Set across countries including Indonesia, the Gambia and Italy, Aldeas chronicles local communities as they create short narrative films inspired by the Pope’s vision of unity through storytelling. These shorts, each a testament to cultural identity and human connection, will premiere in newly established cinemas designed to serve as lasting cultural hubs. The behind-the-scenes journeys of these productions are woven into the documentary, alongside never-before-seen conversations between Scorsese and the late pontiff.
Speaking about the project, Scorsese said: "Now, more than ever, we need to talk to each other… sharing the stories of who we are… helps us understand and value how each of us sees the world." Pope Francis, in turn, described the initiative as "poetic and constructive," touching the very "essence of a life’s journey."
