'Game of Thrones' 'Ruined' Jon Snow Too — But George Martin Still has a Chance to Fix It

Still from the series 'Game of Thrones' (2011)

Fans of A Song of Ice and Fire have new reason to wait.

One of the most successful TV series of modern times, Game of Thrones continues to spark heated debates among both fans and critics. Initially marketed as an adaptation of George R.R. Martin's book series, the show faced repeated criticism for straying from the original plot, with some of the harshest critiques coming from the author himself.

The show concluded in 2019 after eight seasons, failing to become the definitive adaptation many had hoped for, leaving a significant number of A Song of Ice and Fire fans disappointed with its treatment of the source material. Yet, it seems premature to write off the story entirely, as Martin has yet to finish his book series, meaning there’s still an opportunity to correct many of the show's missteps. Fans now hope to delve deeper into the story of Jon Snow, a character whose arc in the series was, somewhat surprisingly, left underexplored.

The Game of Thrones Oversight of Jon Snow's Unique Ability

By the end of the series, many fans were thoroughly disillusioned, seeing George R.R. Martin's original vision altered to the point that even key characters appeared shallow compared to their book counterparts. This was particularly noticeable with Jon Snow, played by Kit Harington. Although his death in the sixth season was one of the most shocking moments in Game of Thrones, many fans familiar with the books felt his resurrection lacked sufficient explanation. The show made no mention of Jon Snow's unique ability, which is pivotal in the novels.

In A Song of Ice and Fire, Jon Snow possesses a remarkable gift: the ability to "warg" into his direwolf, Ghost. While all of the Stark children shared this ability, only Bran was able to fully develop it. Had Jon used this power, he could have experienced the events following his death from within Ghost, which would have made his return to life in the series more meaningful and grounded in the narrative.

The Winds of Winter Must Fully Explore Jon Snow’s Story

As A Song of Ice and Fire still hasn’t reached the events of the eighth season of Game of Thrones, Martin has the chance to rectify the mistakes made by the series, which for many fans, irreparably tarnished the epic adaptation. Jon Snow, one of the most important characters in the books, always had far more potential than what the show portrayed. Kit Harington himself has said he would feel disappointed if Jon were to return without significant changes, both in the world around him and in his own perception of events.

With The Winds of Winter, the forthcoming book, Martin now has the perfect opportunity to address these plot holes and provide fans with the deeper exploration they’ve been craving. The book is expected to be the penultimate instalment of the saga, offering a chance to fix what was left unsaid in the adaptation.
